What Happens During Megasessions?

Using a thin strip of tissue removed from the scalp, Dr. Fisher separates individual grafts under a microscope. Each graft contains about 1 to 3 hairs each. During a single megasession of approximately 5 to 6 hours, Dr. Fisher can transplant up to 3,000 grafts. That means patients may receive 6,000 to 7,000 hairs at a time.

The strip method used during megasessions is an alternative to the meticulous follicular unit extraction (FUE) procedure that Dr. Fisher offers using the NeoGraft®transplant system. NeoGraft is an automated system that requires surgeons to extract donor hairs one follicle at a time. It’s an appropriate method for certain patients, and Dr. Fisher will discuss during your consultation which method best suits your needs.

Am I a Candidate for a Megasession?

Which hair transplant method is the best for you depends on the type and quality of the donor hair itself. That is more important than the method used to harvest the donor hair.

Whether you are a good candidate for the strip method or FUE hair transplantation is something Dr. Fisher can recommend based on his expertise and years of experience. Designing a natural hairline requires a surgeon with advanced skill.

Some patients opt to have the FUE transplant because they are worried the horizontal scar that results from the strip method will prevent them from wearing their hair short. However, if a strip donor site is properly closed, the scar is minimal.

Advantages of Megasessions

There are both surgical and social advantages to undergoing a longer hair transplant session:

  • Grafts can be placed closer together
  • The maximum number of donor hairs available for grafting is often the highest during the initial transplant session
  • From a social perspective, numerous hair transplant sessions over a long period, as some methods require, may draw attention to the process. Many patients find the megasession more discreet.
